Junior women Lakers earn split at season-opening mini-tournament

Lakers rolled to victory over South Muskoka Breakers, but rally fell just short against hometown Huntsville Hurricanes

On Saturday the Orillia Junior Women Lakers travelled to Huntsville for a basketball mini-tournament to open their season.

In the first game, the Lakers were up against South Muskoka Breakers and came away with a 49-22 victory.

After dealing with first-game nerves, the Lakers controlled the game throughout. Emma Thomson led the way scoring 12 points. Also scoring were Ashley Schryer (10 points), with Lauryn Buchan and Hennessy Langer adding 8 points. Rounding out the scoring were Ellery Ingersoll-McNeely (4 points), Mya Erskine (3 points), Kaitlyn Roberts and Taylor Betchold-Coon (2 points each).

In the second game, the hometown Huntsville Hurricanes came out strong and built a 31-20 halftime lead. However, in the third quarter Orillia picked up their defence and closed the gap to a 37-31 deficit. The fourth quarter was a back and forth affair, but Huntsville held on for the victory 56-53.

Leading the way for Orillia was Hennessy Langner with 17 points. Other scorers for Lakers were Emma Thomson (11 points), Ashley Schryer (9 points), Lauryn Buchan (8 points), Mya Erskine and Taylor Betchold-Coon (3 points), and Ellery Ingersoll-McNeely with 2 Taylor Betchold-Coon. Lauren Murphy and Kaitlyn Roberts were solid in their defensive play throughout the games.

On Saturday, Dec. 14 the Lakers Women open their Junior “C” League action in Hamilton vs York South Silver Knights and Toronto Lords. The team thanks Dr. Kim McIntosh for her sponsorship this season.
