'Hopefully this cash allows the food bank to go out and buy all the turkeys for the recipients,' says league president

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 34 Men's Dart League raised $365 for The Sharing Place Food Centre earlier this week.

The first annual Christmas Charity Shoot was an initiative aimed at supporting the community, says Dave Murdoch, the president of the dart league.

“We went out to have some fun,” he said. “I think raising almost $400 is pretty good for our first year.”

Murdoch says it’s important for the Legion to have successful charity events in order to support local people, teams, and charities.

“The Legion is always looking out for everybody,” he said. “Hopefully, this cash allows the food bank to go out and buy all the turkeys for the recipients.”

The goal of the tournament was to make a difference in the community by giving those less fortunate a good Christmas, he said.

“We had about 60 people there on Tuesday,” Murdoch said. “Everybody donated $5 when they came in and then we donated our 50/50, so we did pretty well.”

Murdoch says Tuesday’s event was a trial run, explaining the league hopes to run more charity events going forward.

“I think if we did a tournament on the weekend for four or five hours, we would be able to raise probably triple what we did on Tuesday,” he said.

To sign up for the men’s, ladies, or mixed dart leagues at the Legion, call 705-325-8442.

“The more people we can get down there, the more we can do for our community,” Murdoch said.
