Local dynamic duo sizzles at national figure skating championship

Daniel Patriquin and Sophia Gover skated to personal bests to finish in the top 10 in Canada-wide competition in Mississauga

Daniel Patriquin of the Orillia Figure Skating Club and Sophia Gover of the Barrie Skating Club have been skating as an Ice Dance Team for several years and competing in their fifth season together. 

Patriquin and Gover train and are coached at the Mariposa School of Skating. The duo recently qualified for the 2020 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships in Mississauga, where they competed Jan. 13-14.

Patriquin and Gover skated their pattern dances and scored a personal best, placing them in 9th spot going into the free dances. THe dynamic duo scored another personal best securing them the ninth spot in the Novice Ice Dance category in their first Canadian National Skating Championships!

Skaters from the Orillia Figure Skating Club also recently competed at the December Stratford Classic. The results are as follows:

  • Jayme Zwiers: first, Adult Gold
  • Hailey Irwin: first, Star 6, Group 5
  • Carlea Wilkie-Ellis: first, Special Olympics Star 7 Artistic; second, Special Olympics Level 5 Freeskate; second, Special Olympics Level 5 Solo dance
