Local hockey players score big effort for Sharing Place Food Bank

Predators players were at four local grocery stores Saturday morning; More than $1,000 in cash and almost 1,200 pounds of food was collected

Two local hockey teams gave a big assist to those in need Saturday.

The North Central Predators AAA minor atoms decided to organize and run a food drive Saturday morning.

Players, in their distinctive yellow jerseys, could be found at Jason's No Frills, Food Basics, Zehrs and Foodland Saturday morning between 9 a.m. and noon. During that time, they politely asked shoppers to make donations to The Sharing Place Food Bank.

The idea was the brainchild of the team's manager, Leah Tuyten, who wanted the kids to learn the importance of giving.

"These kids did their part to help the community going into the holiday season," said Tuyten. "I love hearing how much they enjoyed talking to people and handing out candy canes at the grocery stores."

The Orillia Hawks peewee B team, also managed by Tuyten, joined in the effort. Both the Hawks and the North Simcoe Capitals, in Orillia to take on the  Hawks, also came onside to help and made donations.

And the community responded with cash and donations of non-perishable food.

In the end, $1,095 was collected in monetary donations and 1,196 pounds of food was also gathered for The Sharing Place.

"The kids had a blast and we are so thankful for the support," said Tuyten, who also expressed gratitude for the local grocery stores that allowed them to conduct the food drive at those busy spots.

The Sharing Place is in need of support during the holiday season. The need is greater than ever before. Visit their website to find out how you can help.
