Local Nordic skiers gearing up for Nationals

It's been a stellar season for Team Hardwood

Team Hardwood is making the trek to Gatineau, Quebec this week to compete in the 2019 Canadian Cross Country Ski Championships to be held from March 13 to March 20.

Local skiers will be joining 800 athletes as well as their coaches and parents who will also attending this year's event for the country's top Nordic athletes.

Athletes will be competing in a number of events including a pursuit, sprints, team sprints and distance races.

Team Hardwood has garnered much success leading to this point in the season. Some of these individual and team accomplishments include:

  • Numerous medals at Ontario Cup races;
  • Seven medals at the Eastern Canadian championships;
  • An OFSAA silver medal in senior boys' competition captured by Reid Kidner of Oro-Medonte;
  • Attained a Top 3 club ranking in the Ontario Cup final rankings; and
  • Seven medals at the Ontario Youth championships with golds by Sully MacDonald and Liam Ryan.

Local athletes include Jessica Roach, who captured the XCSO Overall Senior Women’s Title. Roach also claimed title to the leader’s bib for the majority of Ontario Cup races.

Other local racers heading to Quebec are Reid Kidner, Leyla Barber, Declan Barber, Sierra MacDonald, Sully MacDonald, Liam Ryan, Maeve Conaghan, Alec MacLean and Robbie Raikou.

Team Hardwood, based out of Hardwood Ski and Bike, is coached by four-time Canadian Olympic Coach Jack Sasseville.
