Three members of the Orillia Channel Cats Swim Club participated in the Lake Ontario Waterkeepers, Toronto Island Lake Swim.

Three distances are offered 750 metres, 1.5 kilometres, and 3.8 kilometres. The event is open to recreational swimmers up to competitive swimmers.

Flora Haslem (15) completed the 3.8 km swim in 62 minutes, finishing first in her age group and earning a fifth place overall finish. Teammate Katie Heckendorn (9) was the only nine-year-old in the swim. She was first in her age group and completed the 1.5 km distance in 30 minutes.

Owen Wager (13) also completed the 1.5 km swim, clocking a time of 37 minutes. He was fifth in his age group.

“This was the first time all three swimmers participated in an open water event in Lake Ontario and they all handled it like a swim in the park. I am so proud of their efforts,” says Coach Tatum Haslem.

The next open water event will be in the Welland Canal in two weeks.
