This past weekend, the U14 Horse Power Electrical Maintenance and Contracting Co. Orillia Lakers boys team travelled to Hamilton to participate in the Blessed Sacrament Basketball Tournament.

The boys started the tournament against the Niagara Red Raiders 3 early Saturday morning. The Lakers boys started out slow and trailed after the first quarter. From there, the Lakers picked up their defence and won a close game 62-59.

Their second game was against the Norfolk Nets and the Lakers were too much for the inexperienced Nets clinching the game with a score of 69-38.

The final game of the round robin was against the Kirkland Lake Swamp Donkeys and the Lakers took care of business with a 56-25 victory to finish the round robin with a 3-0 record and a first-place finish.

The semifinals had the Lakers clash against the Lindsay Wildcats which was a back and forth game that finished with the Lakers squeaking out a 47-44 win.

From there, the Laker boys were on to the finals against a familiar foe in the Niagara Red Raiders 2, whom the Lakers played in the final the previous year and they came out victorious.

This year, the Lakers started the game on fire with a bunch of three pointers early which helped them get out to a double-digit lead to end the first. In the second quarter, Niagara came out strong and were able to get within one point at the half.

The second half started like the first and the Lakers came out on fire and they locked in defensively to take control and repeat as champions with a 59-52 victory.

The boys would like to thank their parents, families and friends for their support throughout the weekend as well as thank the organizers for a great tournament.
