The Summer Slam in Simcoe inter-club series continued this past Wednesday.

The Oro-Medonte Tennis Club, having seen the successes of Orillia in OrilliaMatters, decided to issue a challenge to the, at the time, undefeated inter-club team in Orillia.

Oro-Medonte brought a highly skilled and competitive team that proved to be quite the match for your Orillia Tennis Club (OTC). Such matches are based on equal ratings using Tennis Canada’s rating system.

Thanks to the skills and quality of players brought by Oro-Medonte, these four courts were the highest-ranked courts we’ve seen this season. The matches were so tightly contested that three of the four courts had to be decided based on tiebreakers, a rare moment during such competitions. One tiebreaker went to a total of 28 gruelling points to decide an outcome.

The breakdown was exciting.

After dropping the first set, OTC’s Peter and Eric stormed back and defeated Mike and Maddie on Court 1, 4-6, 6-4 and 10-7 in a third-set tie break.

OTC’s Jeff and Lei won the first set but eventually fell to Mark and Isaac on Court 2, 6-3, 2-6 and 4-10 again in a third-set tie break.

With the match tied after courts 1 and 2, the contest would be decided on courts 3 and 4. OTC’s Neil and Sal played very well together and won in two straight sets over Sandip and Gabor, 6-2 and 6-4, giving OTC a 2-1 edge.

Court 4 would decide things. After winning the first set but then dropping the second set, OTC’s Kate and Shannon won a real third-set marathon over Sheila and Slavka, 6-4, 0-6 and 15-13, in the third-set tie break.

With three of the sets requiring a tiebreaker to decide the overall match, the competition was intense. Your Orillia Tennis Club came out on top yet again in a highly skilled and close match with our friends from Oro-Medonte. Immediately after the match the Oro-Medonte club was eagerly looking for a rematch. Both sides are searching for dates for a potential rematch. Stay tuned.

For now your Orillia Tennis Club retains its bragging rights being undefeated against regional clubs from Barrie, Bracebridge and now Oro-Medonte.
