Orillia Rowing Club athletes excel despite tough conditions

Rowers shine at Muskoka Fall Classic and Head of the Trent in Peterborough

Meghan Rogers, who trained with the Orillia Rowing Club in the spring of this year, competed in the Canada Summer Games for Alberta. She placed fifth in the final of the women's lightweight double category in a highly competitive field.

At the Muskoka Fall Classic in Gravenhurst on Sept. 10, 2022:

  • Molly Hazel placed second in the U19 single category.
  • Rebecca Bouwhuis placed fifth in the women's club/senior single category.
  • Rebecca Bouwhuis and Molly Havel placed fourth in the women's club/senior doubles.
  • Arlene Jackson and Joanne Bozek placed fourth in the women's grand masters (50+) doubles.
  • Manuela Lord and Kristine Riedel-Fiddick placed fifth in the women's grand masters doubles.

At the Head of the Trent in Peterborough on Oct. 1 and 2, 2022:

  • Molly Hazel placed third in the women's youth 16+ singles event.
  • Elias Fiddick placed 18th in the men's youth 16+ singles event.

"Both athletes are to be commended for rowing in very challenging conditions, including a strong headwind, for the duration of their races," coach Anne Hodkin stated.

Finally, at the Martha Coffey Frostbite Sprints in Toronto on Oct. 30, 2022:

  • Emma Botari, Sam Pecorella, Matthew Pecorella and Maelle Bouchard placed first in the youth mixed quad, and second in the novice mixed quad event.
  • Arlene Jackson, Kristine Fiddick, Manuela Lord and Iris Fiddick placed second in the recreational women's quad event. 

Botari, Pecorella, Pecorella and Bouchard also won a prize for their Minion Halloween costumes!

While the boathouse is now closed for the season, competitive and recreational rowers, as well as non-rowers interested in taking up indoor rowing, can enrol in a winter training program through the Orillia Recreation Centre. The program involves erging, strength and core training, as well as stretching, and takes place Monday and Wednesday (4 to 6 p.m.) from Oct. 17, 2022 to March 29, 2023.
