Orillia Suns Galaxy U12 girls capture silver at Provincials

Local squad roars back to earn win in semi-final, loses tough match in gold-medal contest

This past weekend, the Orillia Suns Galaxy U12 girls’ volleyball team competed at the Ontario Volleyball Association Provincial Championships in Waterloo.

Ranked first in Division 2, the team had a very successful weekend with 46 teams participating at the U12 Girls level.

On Saturday, the team finished with an even record in preliminaries, defeating teams from Ancaster and Kitchener/Waterloo while losing competitive matches against Milton and Durham.

On Sunday, the playoff round began. The Suns Galaxy defeated West Nipissing in the quarter-final game (25-12, 23-25, 15-8).

In the semi-final game, the Suns faced the North Bay Lakers. Down 21-10 in the first set, the team played with incredible determination and came back to win 25-23. After losing a close second set 18-25, the girls again came back from a 14-10 deficit to defeat the Lakers 16-14 in the tie breaker.

In the finals, the Suns Galaxy played Markham Unity, eventually losing a close first set 20-25 and the second 10-25.

As a result, the Suns Galaxy captured the silver medal for Division 2, Tier 2.
