The women’s doubles championships saw a number of familiar and new faces take to the courts in friendly competition last Saturday, Sept. 9.

It was the kickoff for the Month of Doubles sponsored by the Orillia Tennis Club.

Annually, the club runs a large event, the club championships. Different levels of play and different combinations of tournaments allow members to test their skills against one another with the prize of having their names engraved on the club trophies (displayed at the West Orillia Sports Complex) and bragging rights for the year.

It was a beautiful day, a bit on the cool side when the sun went away, but things certainly heated up on the tennis courts. The women got right into the spirit of the day and play was at a high level.

There were lots of deuces, indicating close matches, but also making them longer. Owing to the skills and teamwork of our players, the event went on for some time. There were many close battles, but everyone had fun including the cheering section supporting their favourite players.

The club championship final saw Debbie Hele and Shannon Kearns take on Vanessa Nguyen and Hannah Clark. It was a spirited match but the veteran team of Debbie and Shannon took the match 6-0, 6-0 to capture the women’s doubles title.

The closeness of each of the tournament matches and the time it took to resolve the matches saw Debbie Sheffield and Linda Alm face Anita Nicholls and Donna Moore for the consolation finals. In the end the runners-up in the consolation match were too tired from the close battles earlier on to go into another match and unfortunately decided to forfeit. As a result, Debbie Sheffield and Linda Alm are our women’s consolation winners.

A big thank you to Vera Mader and Margie McParland, who co-ordinated the tournament, Vera, who filed the report, and a shout-out to the ball kids, who did an awesome job keeping the balls away from other courts and assisting the players.

All in all, an excellent tournament, wonderful competition and great spirit amongst the players. The next tournament is Saturday, Sept. 16 at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. featuring the men’s doubles. Come out to watch live tennis in Orillia at the West Orillia Sports Complex. All are welcome. Bring a chair and enjoy the matches.
