Orillia's Lakers capture gold at Ontario Cup

Local squad went undefeated in Windsor en route to capturing crown

The Pilger Equipment Sales U11 girls travelled to Windsor this past weekend to compete in the Ontario Cup.

On Friday they faced the Timmins Selects and it was a close game right until the end; the Lakers were able to pull away, winning 33-26. Top scorers for this game were Emma Dongelmans and Ali Rolston with eight points apiece and Emma Pilger adding another six.

On Saturday, the Lakers battled against the Kitchener Waterloo Wildhawks and although the Wildhawks were ahead at half, the Lakers were able to come back and win a close game, 25-22. The top scorers for this game were Ali Rolston and Emma Dongelmans with eight points and Ryan Lazier with six.

The next game on Saturday put the Lakers up against the Vaughan Panthers. The Lakers were in control of this game from the start, winning 34-19. The top scorers were Ali Rolston with 14 points, Emma Dongelmans with eight and Emma Pilger with six.

This win ensured the Lakers a spot in the gold medal final on Sunday.

For the final, the Lakers faced the Sudbury Jam and although the Lakers had a good lead coming into the half, Sudbury was able to come back to within three points with four minutes to play.

The Lakers played with composure and were able to close out the game, winning 29-24. The top scorers for the final were Emma Dongelmans with 13 points, Ali Rolston with six and Emma Pilger and Lily Balaisis adding another four points each.

The Lakers worked hard, played with heart and had fun this weekend.

Their coaches are very proud of these girls and how they were able to play as a team and come home with the gold medal!

Well-deserved and a great way to close out a successful season of basketball!
