The Orillia Suns U18 girls volleyball team had a successful tournament in North Bay this past weekend. The team went undefeated all day except for losing one set in pool play to our own 17U Suns team first thing in the morning.

During the gold-medal match, our setter went down with a rolled ankle in the first set. However, thanks to the work of our athletic therapist, he was able to get her back into the game and win the first set 25-12. The next set began with no setter as she was getting her ankle re-taped between sets. The girls had a commanding lead of 20-12, but lost a close set as the team could not stop the momentum of our opponent’s offensive attack. To begin the third and final set, we found ourselves behind as our opponent adjusted to our setter’s reduced range of mobility. Faced with this adversity, the team stepped up and played extremely well to take back the lead from the Barrie Elites and win the gold medal.

Kudos to our setter Brittney Dunlop, outside hitter Olivia Burnie, middles Jordan Phillips, Lydia Fearon, and captain Domonique De Francesco. The coaching staff is very proud of how this team played through injuries (setting on one foot most of the match). The team adjusted to a period of no setter during the match, made adjustments on defence to dig balls that should have scored points, displayed great blocking, created awesome attacks and had some really hard serves. Their hard work on the court displayed the true character of this team.
