Last weekend, the Orillia Suns Nova 18U women’s team competed in the VolleyFX Winter Challenge in Rochester, New York. The ladies played well during the event and played some top teams from the New York, Ohio and Eastern Pennsylvania areas.

On Day 1, the Suns started play against the NOVA Juniors from Ohio who are ranked high in their district; an unfortunate loss gave the ladies a bit of spirit and they rebounded to defeat the Onondaga Storm and the LAVA Quake to claim second place in their pool.

The ladies were excited to now be in the top 16 of the 28-team tournament. The second pool proved to be much harder and the ladies suffered losses to VolleyFX Magic, the eventual tournament gold medalists in the gold division, and the Ottawa Fusion team.

The Suns came back strong on Day 2 and, after a close loss to Niagara County Rush, they found themselves in a tie and needed to play a tiebreaker. The tiebreaker was one of the best performances of the girls to date and they ended up in third place, placing them in the Silver Division.

After wins against the Oakville Thunder and Rochester Paradigm the ladies were poised once again to face the Niagara County Team. This time the ladies did not show fear and with their best performance of the tournament, the Suns defeated them in two straight sets to win the gold medal in the Silver Division. The coaches would like to congratulate the team on an outstanding result.

The ladies have one more tournament prior to the Ontario Championships that will be held in Kitchener at the end of April.
