At a weekend tournament at North Bay’s Nipissing University, the 14U Orillia SUNS Strikers won a silver medal.

The SUNS were sluggish in the morning and under-performed in the preliminary rounds, which featured two-set contests.

In the first game, Orillia suffered a two-set loss to the Kawartha Krushers, followed by a split set second game against the West Nipissing Wild and a third game versus the Georgian Cubs, in which they lost both sets.

The result was an 8th place seeding heading into the afternoon play-off rounds, meaning the girls had to beat the best teams to advance.

The afternoon games were best-of-three sets and the SUNS heated up when it was needed most.

The first game was against the tournament-best Markham Unity East team, who were outshone by the SUNS in three sets.

In the semi-finals, the SUNS once again faced the Kawartha Krushers, who were surprised to be outplayed this time around by the Orillia team, who won in two straight sets (25-14, 26-24) to get to the gold-medal game.

The final game saw the glow of the SUNS fade, losing both sets to the host North Bay Lakers. Despite the loss, the mood was one of jubilation as the Orillia SUNS Strikers took home their first medal since initially forming as 12U team two years ago.
