Trio of local athletes set to run for gold at OFSAA

Oro-Medonte sisters and Orillia teen have all qualified for prestigious provincial cross-country running event to be held in Sudbury

Oro-Medonte sisters Isabella and Ava Holmgren are headed to the provincial high school cross-country running championship.

Isabella Holmgren placed second at the Georgian Bay Secondary School Association championship at Arrowhead Provincial Park this week. Her sister, Ava, finished third.

Those impressive performances allowed the teens to punch their tickets to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Association (OFSAA) championship slated for Nov. 2 in Sudbury.

The girls attend secondary school at Nouvelle Alliance in Barrie and are excited to compete at their first OFSAA event. They will be competing in the novice girls’ competition, where they will be running approximately four kilometres over varied terrain including some significant hills.

They will be joined by Orillia’s Anna Jaklova. The Twin Lakes Secondary School student was fourth at Arrowhead and will also be competing at OFSAA in the novice division.

All three girls are proficient athletes in multiple sports. Ava and Isabella Holmgren both compete in mountain biking and cyclocross and also swim for the Orillia Channel Cats.

Jaklova is a competitive cross-country skier.

The trio hope to continue their stellar run of success in Sudbury next week.
