The U12 Orillia Lakers girls’ basketball team won their 10th game of the season on Sunday afternoon, as they completed a four-game sweep during league play at the Hoop Dome in Vaughan.

Coached by Josh Morgan and Jon Vodarek, the team consists of 13 players, half of whom are playing for the first time.

The Lakers began the season with four consecutive losses. However, with hard work, focus, and defensive intensity the team has significantly improved and now boasts a 10-5-1 record on the season.

The Lakers began the weekend on Saturday by setting the tone with a strong defensive effort, which earned the Lakers a 48-13 win against the Midland Waves and a 23-10 win against the Collingwood Trailblazers.

On Sunday, the Lakers began with a hard-fought 20-9 victory against Bradford CYO.

The final game of the weekend was against the YNBA Avengers, and it did not disappoint. The Lakers took control of the game early, and headed into the second half with an eight-point lead. YNBA stormed back to tie the game, before Karstin Picken connected with Amelia Vodarek, who scored a buzzer-beating jump shot to seal an exhilarating 25-23 triumph.

The Lakers continue their season on Feb. 25 in Collingwood, where they will play three games.
