Young Channel Cat qualifies for provincials

Hartley Russell, 10, will compete in 50-metre freestyle following success at Muskats Splash Meet

The Orillia Channel Cats Swim Club recently hosted the Muskats Splash Meet at the Orillia Recreation Centre.

Clubs from Peterborough and Muskoka were in attendance along with the 56 Orillia members. Swimmers from junior novice, senior novice, bronze, silver and gold were in attendance. This was the first competition for a lot of the new swimmers of the club, and everyone did a great job overcoming their nerves and stepping up on the blocks for the first time.

“Our swimmers seemed to really enjoy themselves and were excited to be competing,” said assistant coach Justin Fairgrieve.

Hartley Russell, 10, qualified for Provincial Festivals in the 50-metre freestyle. Hartley trains in the bronze group and is coached by Tatum Haslem.

“We had a lot of personal best times from all groups and were very happy with the level of support the swimmers demonstrated toward each other,” adds coach Tatum Haslem.
