Some people in big cities joke there’s two seasons: Construction and winter.

In Orillia, there’s also two seasons: Hockey and lacrosse.

And while summer may seem like a distant mirage, lacrosse season is upon us.

The Orillia Experience Nissan Jr. B Kings will kick off the home portion of their 2019 season tonight when they welcome the Halton Hills Bulldogs to Rotary Place.

This year’s Kings squad is a team in transition.

After three years at the helm, coach Jim Meredith decided to step aside at the end of last season. He has been replaced by assistant coach Rob McDonald.

But the biggest transition comes with the players.

Six veterans, all of whom had played important, key roles on the team for several years, are now too old to play for the local Jr. B club.

“We are a really young team this year,” said Kings long-time general manager Rob Blasdell.

“But the kids really work hard and they want to learn, which is great.”

And while they are learning and working hard, they are off to a “tough start.” The Kings opened the season Sunday, losing 12-5 to Newmarket, and then dropped a 15-9 decision to the West Durham Ironheads Wednesday night.

Blasdell is hoping playing at home will help turn around their fortunes.

“We’re looking forward to playing in front of a home crowd and we’re really hoping people will come out and support us,” said Blasdell.

Although there are several new faces, there are also some familiar ones in this year’s lineup.

Among the returnees are Braydon Hickey, Dallin Blunt, Michael Montgomery, Mitchell Pellarin, Michael Greco and Jordan Roberts.

The team will also get a boost when Mitchell Goode, who is playing field lacrosse in the U.S., returns to his hometown this summer.

The veteran netminder is expected to suit up for the Kings next week.

“He’s a fifth-year player who brings a lot of experience to the lineup,” said Blasdell, who was a professional lacrosse goalie who shone in the NLL.

It is hoped Goode can serve as a mentor to the club’s first-year starter, Logan Matthews.

Tonight’s game against the Bulldogs, who sport a 1-1 record, begins at 8 p.m. at Rotary Place.

On Saturday night, the Kings welcome the perennially powerful Green Gaels. Game time at Rotary Place is 8 p.m.

During home games this year, there will be a Booster Club during and after the game.
