This week marked the one-year anniversary of the first confirmed case of COVID-19 in Ontario.
It's been a long 12 months of isolation, rapidly-changing public health guidelines and stress.
Over the last week, just as many hoped things would start to get better, it has started to get worse as the deadly UK variant of COVID-19 has been confirmed in our area.
Authorities say it's responsible for the 45 deaths at Roberta Place, a long-term care home in Barrie.
This week, Dr. Charles Gardner, the region's medical officer of health, said the variant has also been detected at Waypoint, the mental health hospital in Penetanguishene.
Gardner said he's concerned about the ability to control this virus due to issues related to the vaccine.
As a result of these new challenges, many fear the stay-at-home orders and province-wide lockdown will be extended.
