At OrilliaMatters, we strive each day to reflect our community.

That’s why we diligently cover each city council meeting and try to make sense of decisions made at City Hall for our readers.

Over the past several months, we have worked around the clock to keep you up to date on the ever-changing impact of the pandemic - provincially, nationally, globally, and perhaps most importantly, locally.

When something happens in the community, we are there to provide coverage.

But we also try to assist local organizations - both large and small - to get the word out about events, needs and initiatives.

A few weeks ago, reporter Sam Gillett wrote a story about the Comfie Cat Shelter, which is in peril due to a dire need for funding and more volunteers.

In the days after that story was published, the Norweld Drive facility “received an outpouring of donations and support,” said a very relieved and thankful Barb MacLeod.

In addition, the no-kill shelter received “a bunch of new applications for volunteers - many of which are students,” MacLeod reported, adding the article created a “buzz” in the community about the shelter and its needs.

All in all, it was just what the doctor ordered.

"The shelter can hold on a little longer now," she said.

It’s just one small example of why local journalists and local journalism matters. It underlines the importance of telling the stories that matter to our community.
