146 new COVID cases in region since Friday, four in Penetanguishene

There is also one case in Tiny Township reported in the health unit's first local case update since Friday

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported 146 new COVID-19 cases and two deaths since its last update on Friday. 

The two deaths reported today include a Barrie resident and a Bradford West Gwillimbury resident. One was a woman between 65 and 79 years old who died on May 16, and one was a man between 45 and 64 years old who died on May 18. 

There are 558 active, lab-confirmed cases in the region, most of which are in Simcoe County.

In Simcoe-Muskoka, 245 cases have ended in death since March 2020.

The health unit has reported 4,431 variant cases confirmed to date, with 422 of those cases still active. 

Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 11,726 cases of COVID-19 with 10,367 of those cases recovered. 

There are 19 people from Simcoe County and one from Muskoka District hospitalized with COVID-19, which includes three new hospitalizations since Friday.

To date, 287,209 people in Simcoe-Muskoka region have received their first dose of vaccination against COVID-19, which is about 47.5 per cent of the region's population and approximately 58 per cent of the region's adult population. About 5.1 per cent of the population has received two doses of vaccine.

On Friday, May 21, the health unit administered more than 8,000 doses of vaccinations against COVID-19, which is a record for the region.

In Simcoe County, 252,055 residents (46.8 per cent of the population) have received one dose of vaccine, and 26,328 (4.9 per cent) have received two doses.

The new cases reported in Simcoe County and Muskoka District today include (case transmission is under investigation unless otherwise specified).

  • Collingwood (4): Three people between 18 and 34 years old and one person between 45 and 64 years old. Two cases are linked to close contact transmission and two are listed as community-acquired. 
  • Wasaga Beach (3): Three people between 65 and 79 years old. one case is listed as community-acquired. 
  • Springwater (3): Three people between 45 and 64 years old, and all cases were linked to close contact transmission. 
  • Barrie (44): Seven youth under 18 years old, 17 people between 18 and 34 years old, eight people between 35 and 44 years old, seven people between 45 and 64 years old, three people between 65 and 79 years old, and two people over 79 years old. Two cases are outbreak-related, four are listed as community-acquired transmission, and 21 cases have been linked to close contact. 
  • Innisfil (18): Six youth under 18 years old, three people between 18 and 34 years old, four people between 35 and 44 years old, and five people between 45 and 64 years old. Five cases are listed as community-acquired, and 12 are linked to close contact transmission. 
  • Bradford (25): Three youth under 18 years old, seven people between 18 and 34 years old, six people between 35 and 44 years old, seven people between 45 and 64 years old, and two people between 65 and 79 years old. Eight cases are linked to close contact transmission, nine are listed as community-acquired, and one is outbreak-related. 
  • Orillia (2): Two people between 18 and 34 years old. One case was linked to close contact transmission. 
  • Severn (1): One person between 45 and 64 years old. 
  • Oro-Medonte (1): One person between 18 and 34 years old. 
  • Tiny (1): One person between 35 and 44 years old whose case is linked to close contact transmission. 
  • Penetanguishene (4): Three people between 18 and 34 years old and one person between 45 and 64 years old. All four cases are outbreak-related. 
  • Essa (3): One person between 18 and 34 years old, one person between 35 and 44 years old, and one person over 79 years old. One case is listed as community-acquired, and one is linked to close contact transmission. 
  • Adjala-Tosorontio (3): One youth under 18 years old, one person between 18 and 34 years old, and one person between 45 and 64 years old. One case is listed as community-acquired, and one is linked to close contact transmission. 
  • New Tecumseth (30): Six youth under 18 years old, 13 people between 18 and 34 years old, six people between 35 and 44 years old, three people between 45 and 64 years old, and two people between 65 and 79 years old. One case is travel-related, two are outbreak-related, nine are listed as community-acquired, and 13 are linked to close contact transmission. 
  • There are four new cases in Muskoka, including one in Muskoka Lakes, two in Gravenhurst, and one in Huntsville.

The health unit does sometimes remove a case or move them based on further investigation of location data. The chart below reflects updated totals for each municipality as reported by the health unit on May 25).
