29 new COVID cases in region today

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported 29 new COVID-19 cases and no new deaths today (May 26). 

There are 541 active, lab-confirmed cases in the region, most of which are in Simcoe County.

The health unit has reported 4,447 variant cases confirmed to date, with 406 of those cases still active. 

Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 11,751 cases of COVID-19 with 10,405 of those cases recovered and 245 cases ending in death.

Young adults between 18 and 34 years old have the highest rates of infection since February 2021.

There are 22 people from Simcoe County and one from Muskoka District hospitalized with COVID-19, which includes five new hospitalizations since yesterday.

To date, 292,801 people in Simcoe-Muskoka region have received their first dose of vaccination against COVID-19, which is about 48.4 per cent of the region's population and approximately 59 per cent of the region's adult population. About 5.3 per cent of the population has received two doses of vaccine.

Nearly 80 per cent of the region's over 50 population has received at least one dose of a COVID vaccine, and about 42 per cent of the population between 30 and 49 years old have received one dose.

There are currently 10 active COVID-19 outbreaks in the region, including two at institutions, one at a congregate setting, and seven at workplaces. 

The institutional outbreaks include Creedan Valley long-term care home in Creemore (fewer than five staff cases), and Muskoka Shores long-term care home in Gravenhurst (fewer than five resident cases and fewer than five staff cases). 

The congregate setting outbreak is in Simcoe County and involves two cases. 

The workplace outbreaks include an agriculture workplace (five cases) and an accommodation workplace (13 cases) in Muskoka, and a retail space (six cases), a construction site (one case), a manufacturing workplace (five cases), a food and beverage establishment (five cases) and another retail space (two cases) in Simcoe County.

The new cases reported in Simcoe County and Muskoka District today include (case transmission is under investigation unless otherwise specified).

  • Wasaga Beach (1): One person between 45 and 64 years old whose case is linked to close contact. 
  • Clearview (1): One person between 18 and 34 years old. 
  • Springwater (1): One person between 18 and 34 years old whose case is linked to close contact.
  • Barrie (12): One youth under 18 years old, eight people between 18 and 34 years old, one person between 35 and 44 years old, one person between 45 and 64 years old, and one person between 65 and 79 years old. Three cases are linked to close contact and one is listed as outbreak-related.
  • Innisfil (5): One person between 35 and 44 years old, and four people between65 and 79 years old. Two cases are linked to close contact and one is listed as community-acquired.
  • Bradford (1): One person between 35 and 44 years old.
  • Orillia (3): Two people between 18 and 34 years old and one person between 45 and 64 years old. Two cases are linked to close contact transmission.
  • New Tecumseth (5): Two youth under 18 years old, one person between 35 and 44 years old, one person between 45 and 64 years old, and one person between 65 and 79 years old. Three cases are linked to close contact transmission.

The health unit does sometimes remove a case or move them based on further investigation of location data. The chart below reflects updated totals for each municipality as reported by the health unit on May 26).
