Midland's second-quarter crime report shows an overall decline

Numbers from April until June show a decrease in most crime categories with the exception of sexual assault

Town of Midland saw an increase in crimes related to sexual assaults, but a decrease in all other crime categories from April to June.

According to statistics shared in a report to be presented at the upcoming Midland Police Services Board meeting, sexual assaults reported during the three months forming the second quarter, jumped from four to eight, compared to the same period last year.

However, the report shows that all other crime categories decreased.

Assaults went down from 37 in the second quarter last year to 26 this year. Other crimes against a person decreased to 12 this year, compared to 31 in the second quarter of 2019.

The most drastic decrease was seen in the number of break-and-enters, dropping from 24 last year to just four in 2020.

As well, the number of theft under $5,000 cases saw a decrease from 116 cases last year to 42 cases reported during the same time period this year. 

The numbers also show that the clearance rate for violent crime during the second quarter of 2020 increased 10.7 percent over last year. Further, statistics show that the clearance rate for drug-related crimes jumped from 80 percent last year during the second quarter to 100 percent this year.

The report also shows an overall decrease in Highway Traffic Act violations and incidents related to motor-vehicle collisions.

The number of patrol hours during the second quarter reported by the detachment commander is 2,802.5. There were also 34.5 hours put into marine patrol during the second quarter. Overall, 273 hours of foot patrol were recorded for Midland.

The meeting, which also has a closed session related to outstanding legal matters, begins at 10 a.m. Monday and will be broadcast via Rogers TV.
