He was born on March, 1890 in Gravenhurst and died on November 1939 in Huang Shiko, China.

A physician, surgeon, inventor and controversial political activist, to this day he is idolized by millions in the People’s Republic of China for his selfless devotion to others.

He made significant contributions to medical advancements. As a prominent chest surgeon, he invented instruments used in tubercular surgery and campaigned for the government to establish programs to eradicate tuberculosis.

Bethune was one of the earliest advocates of government-subsidized healthcare, because at the height of the Great Depression, he recognized that there was link between poor economic conditions and ill health.

There is a reason his birthplace, the Bethune Memorial House in Gravenhurst was designated a National Historic Site. Please join Dr. Chris Decker explore the remarkable life and legacy of Dr. Norman Bethune.
