Penetanguishene recorded jumps in a number of crimes in 2020, according to a third-quarter OPP detachment report.

Most of the crimes committed fall within the two main categories: Violent and property crime.

To start off, there was one attempted murder between July and September, compared to zero last year during the same months. This occurrence also makes it, so far, the only such incident to have happened in 2020. There was a murder reported in 2019.

For property crime, there has been a rise in numbers related to theft under $5,000. Last year, 24 cases were recorded during the third quarter, whereas this year, the report shows 42 incidents occurred between July and September.

There was also a huge jump in fraud-related numbers , skyrocketing from six last year to 12 this year during the third quarter.

Incidents in the category of mischief also increased from 14 last year to 17 this year.

An increase was also noted in trafficking numbers that went up from zero during July and September last year to five during the same time this year.

Some categories that have seen a slight decrease including break and enter, assault and sexual assault.

The numbers around traffic charges related to Highway Traffic Act, traffic and non-traffic criminal charges, and alcohol-related charges show a downward trend, going from a total of 643 in July to 534 in August and down to 240 in September.

Similarly, cases that fall within the speeding, seatbelt, impaired and distracted driving categories have gone down from 403 in July to 320 in August to 173 in September.

However, car accidents led to three deaths in this year's third quarter compared to one last year.

The report will be presented by John-Paul Graham, acting inspector and detachment commander, at the police services board meeting, which begins at 8:45 a.m. Monday. The meeting will not be aired on Rogers TV but a recording will be uploaded to the town's YouTube channel later.
