Provincial funding could fuel multiple community projects in Tay

An additional parking lot and a hard surface at Oakwood Park, bridge overpass at First Avenue trail in Port McNicoll, and outdoor exercise equipment in multiple parks are some projects on the list staff will pitch to council this Thursday.

Staff is recommending some 'feel-good' projects around the township with recently announced provincial infrastructure funding.

The suggestions will be brought forward at a Tay council meeting Thursday afternoon. The agenda, available online, includes a staff report that talks about the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program – COVID-19 Resilience Infrastructure Stream, through which the township can access $177,000 to be applied to either one project or its part or multiple projects.

At a previous meeting, council directed staff to come back to the table with options for multiple projects that could be covered under the funding.

Staff is now recommending upgrades to Oakwood Park through additional parking and an all-season hard surface covering the rink. Other projects include constructing a bridge overpass on the 1st  Ave. trail in Port McNicoll, outdoor exercise equipment for use in township parks and/or trail system, and paving the Waubaushene trail connection into Bridgeview Park.

A full project that could be considered under the same funding is that of health and safety upgrades to the Port McNicoll fire hall, which needs changes to building areas pertaining to facilities, such as laundering and drying bunker gear, showering and storing clean bunker gear in a properly ventilated room.

The meeting begins at 2 p.m. and can be viewed online.

But that's not all council is doing Thursday. They begin at 10 a.m. with a committee meeting to address some grant requests and capital budget updates.

The first discussion is around the Community Reach of Simcoe North grant request of $15,000 to go towards an accessibility van. Staff is recommending that the balance in the Ministry for Seniors & Accessibility Grant Program account be used to cover a portion of the grant from the township. Staff further recommends that an equal amount of funds be set aside in 2021 for the Seniors Advisory Committee to hold a seniors symposium.

As well, council will take a look at various funding requests from several community groups, such as Port McNicoll Minor Ball, Port Anglers & Hunters, Waubaushene Santa Claus Parade, Hospice Huronia, Port McNicoll Recreation Committee and Sistema Huronia Music Academy.

One of the capital projects to be brought to council is the Paradise Point Grandview Beach watermain project, money for which should come from the water capital reserve.

The meeting can be viewed using a link available online. Residents can also choose to listen in on both meetings by dialling (705) 999-0385 and enter meeting ID 853 4667 8707.
