Tay Township is getting into the Remebrance Day spirit this week.

On Wednesday, the Victoria Harbour Theo and Elaine Bernard library branch hosts a virtual presentation with well-known announcer Dana McKiel as part of the Historica Canada’s Memory Project.

“I'm really excited,” said branch librarian Heather Fitzgerald. “He's very good and he has lots of stories."

Fitzgerald said McKiel comes from a strong military background with many close family members serving in both World Wars as well as a brother who made his way up the military ranks before retiring.

“He has done research and created a family album highlighting members of his family that were involved in almost all the different conflicts in the last century,” she said, noting McKiel is a great speaker for the Canada Remembers series.

“I would love it if we had a huge virtual turnout. I’m going to be forwarding the information to all the local high schools.”

The presentation is slated to last an hour with Fitzgerald wondering how McKiel will fit his many stories into that tight timeline since there’s also a question and answer session planned for afterwards.

“He told me five stories in my 20-minute conversation with him, which is amazing,” she said, noting one of the stories revolved around McKiel’s trip to his father’s apartment after he had passed away and found 650-calibre machine-gun cartridges from the war.

The program begins at 1 p.m. with pre-registration required by either through email or by calling one of the township’s three library branches (Port McNicoll (705) 534-3511, Victoria Harbour (705) 534-3581 and Waubaushene (705) 538-1122.
