John Stephen Ross Burnie, at the age of 57, lost his battle with addiction when he died of a fentanyl-related overdose on December 29th, 2022, in Surrey, BC. Predeceased by his parents, Wilfred and Helen Burnie. He is survived by his daughter Amanda Zimmerman and grandson Damien, sons Micheal Kalix and John Jaxson as well as the boys' mother, Quintana Gauley. Also survived by a brother Mike ( Teena) Burnie and a sister Michelle (Tim) Robertson. Remembered by his dear friend Raminder Gill and the Gill family, who shared a special bond with John over the years. The family will be ever grateful to the Gill family for all they did for John, both in life and in death.

The last few years sparked a new purpose in John's life with two little boys. He wanted to provide a normal life for them; his cell phone was full of searches for things that children need. John was also a hard worker and took pride in the projects he completed. He often pitched in for friends and neighbours free of charge despite living in near poverty.

John walked a tough road of his own making but nobody felt the sting of shame and regret more than he. His heart was huge and only those closest to him saw his vulnerability. Addiction gripped him early in life and in the end, it took his life. Addiction doesn't discriminate. Look around you. Someone close to you is struggling with addiction. Maybe it's you. Please reach out for help.

At this time there are no plans for a memorial service. In lieu of flowers, the family asks those that are able, to support their local addiction treatment centre.
