It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Father Jim, at Peters Township Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Centre. Predeceased by his parents Howard and Louise Burnie. Devoted and loving brother to Gertrude (Yeb) Jermey, Neil (Margaret), and Gerry. Predeceased by siblings Mary (John) MacLennan, Bernadine (Phil) Larmant, Lawrence (Audrey), Catherine (Amos) Hutchinson and Margaret (Reg) Lahay. He will be sadly missed by his many nieces and nephews.

At very young age he wanted to become a priest, however at age 17 he joined the travelling CN Railroad crew once they found out what a great cook he was promoted to chef. At age 33 he decided to make a major life change and became serious about preparing for the priesthood. He joined the Little Brothers of the Good Shepherd order where he helped run a home for homeless and destitute boys. After a few years he decided to return to his home town and opened the John Bosco for boys, which expanded to Barrie and Jamaica which operated 1972-1979.

At the age 49 he enrolled in the Toronto School of Theology. On February 11, 1984 he was ordained to the priesthood and joined the Spiritan Order (Holy Ghost Fathers)

He was posted to serve his Lord in Mexico, Texas and California and his final posting was St. Mary Catholic church in Hattieville Arkansas until his retirement in June of this year. He spent his brief retirement at the Spiritan’s retirement home in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania.

Interment St. Mary’s Cemetery,Pittsburgh Pennsylvania.
