It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Bernice Elizabeth Lillian Courtney at Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital in Orillia, Ontario on February 5, 2024, in her 92nd year.  Bernice passed peacefully, surrounded by loving family and caring practitioners.  Loving mother to Randy (Leah) and Nancy (Chris - favourite son-in-law).  Proud grandma to Emily, Zach, Courtney (Micheal), Brandon (Jessica), Nicole (Victor) and great-grandmother (GG) to Eldon, Ada and Connor.  Bernice was lucky enough to find love twice in her lifetime and is predeceased by her husband and father of her children, Alexander Hardy Courtney, and 2nd husband Kenneth Horrell.  She is dearly missed by her cousins, especially Heather (Jim) Campbell, Carolyn Pennock and many friends.  She is now reunited with her dear friends Joan and Everett Johnstone, with whom we’re 100% sure she is already plotting some new cottage shenanigans.

Sincere thanks and deepest appreciation go out to Dr. Matthew Smith for his compassionate end of life care, to Dr. John Stokreef for graciously providing brief but thorough, nurturing care, Dr. Bernie Murphy for her excellent ongoing care and to Dr. Rob Cambridge whose intuitive medical expertise gave us an additional 5 and a half years with Bernice.

As per Bernice's wishes, there will be no funeral service but rather a celebration of her well-lived life which will take place sometime in the spring.  Although she never lost her sight, Bernice’s diagnosis and years-long management of macular degeneration inspired a heightened appreciation of Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides, and they became her charity of choice.  Donations in her memory would be greatly appreciated.

Arrangements entrusted to the Mundell Funeral Home.
