Hustwitt, Susan Lee (nee: McRae)

Susan passed away peacefully while surrounded by family on Sunday, January 7th, 2024 at Mariposa House Hospice. She was age 69. Daughter of Theresa and the late Ross McRae of Orillia, Ontario.  Loving mother to Jennifer Hustwitt (David Heiser) of Huntsville, Alabama and Scott Hustwitt (Katrina Hustwitt) of Meaford, Ontario.  Proud and devoted “Nana” to Breanna (9), Bennett (8) and her newest joy Landon (6 months). Cherished sister of Carol Anne McRae, Diana “Marty” Spence (Barry Spence) and David McRae (Monica Fox). Susan was born in Orillia and spent her early years in Longford Mills. The family later moved into Orillia where Susan attended ODCVI high school.

Susan loved the outdoors and enjoyed everything about being close to the water. She was a keen boater, certified scuba diver and an avid windsurfer. Susan later moved to Waterloo, Ontario after becoming a Dental Hygienist.  A new family followed soon after.  As a mother, Susan devoted endless time and energy ensuring her two kids could pursue every interest imaginable. From community swimming pools, dance studios, soccer fields, hockey arenas, ski slopes, equestrian rings, and everywhere in between, Susan was always present and the greatest cheerleader for her kids.

Susan returned to her Orillia roots in 2004 and found enjoyment in playing cards, attending to her gardens, hosting numerous get-togethers and sharing a sunset at her lakefront home. After an initial illness, Susan moved into a condo in Atherley.  She was a dedicated condo board member for Atherley Gardens until 2021 and greatly enjoyed the waterfront community with a view of the narrows. She also embarked on countless trips, both near and far, to visit her children and grandchildren.  Susan will be remembered for her utmost dedication to, and love for, her family and her longing to always be by the water.

Sincere thanks to the numerous doctors, nurses, and care providers from Toronto General Hospital, Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Leacock Care Centre, Happy at Home and most recently Mariposa House.  The family will receive friends and relatives for a Celebration of Life in the clubhouse of Hawk Ridge Golf Course, 1151 Hurlwood Ln, Severn, ON, on Sunday, January 28th, 2024 from 12:00pm to 3:00pm. Memorial words will be shared at 12:30pm.  Messages of condolence are welcomed at www.mundellfuneralhome.com and donations in Susan’s honour can be made to the charity of your choice.
