November 26, 1933 – April 4, 2024

Peacefully at Lakeview Manor Long Term Care in Beaverton, Ontario at the age of 90.

Predeceased by his beloved wife Mary Barbara Johnson. Fondly remembered by his step-daughter Dorthea Hangaard, many dear friends including Peter Schuepp, Clare McCarthy, Cynthia Young, and nephew Michael McGravey.

Leonard was born in Toronto and attended St. Michael’s College School, where he played on the hockey and football teams.

He received a Masters degree in Education and a Graduate Degree in Theology from the University of Toronto, and told good stories of his time studying under Marshall McLuhan.

He taught at Sheridan College and several high schools, and at retirement moved north to Orillia, drawn by his warm memories of summers on Strawberry Island.

Leonard flourished in Orillia as an active member of St. James Anglican Church, where he set up an outreach program for the unhoused, and met the love of his life, Mary Barbara. He was a friend to many people on the main street of Orillia who fondly remember him.

He was a poet, a storyteller, a painter, and loved to read and collect books.

He will be missed by his friends from the Lakehead book study group, and the Bracebridge discussion group.

Gratitude to Lakeview Manor for always providing compassionate care to Len.

All are welcome to attend a funeral service at St. James Anglican Church 58 Peter St. N., Orillia, on Thursday April 18th at 11 am, with a reception to follow at noon. Interment to follow at Atherley Cemetery this summer.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. James, the Orillia Food Bank, or The Lighthouse. Arrangements entrusted to Carson Funeral Home 54 Coldwater St. E., Orillia (705) 326-3595.
