August 24, 1938 – May 21, 2022

Throughout her long life, Ruth always took care of her family and members of her community. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, nurse, and volunteer.

Ruth is predeceased by Wally, her husband of 63 years. She will be fondly remembered by her children Kim (John), Angela (Paul), James (Nancy) and Jennifer; her sister Isabell Phelps (Tom – predeceased); her grandchildren Sarah (Graeme), Emma (Alexander) and Alec (Miriam); and her great-granddaughters Isla and Shannon, who brought her so much joy.  Ruth is the daughter of James and Gladys Isles (predeceased).

When her children were young, Ruth studied to become a registered nurse. She was proud of her work at Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital and for Dr. Mary Trotter in Washago. Ruth was also an active member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Orillia and volunteer with the Oak Terrace Long Term Care Home.

Ruth was a great lover of literature. She was originally an English major at university, and she read and talked about books all her life, right up to her last days. She was always knitting too, making what came to be known as “Grandma socks” for her children and grandchildren. She also donated much of what she knit to charities including Out of the Cold.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Erynn Shaw and Dr. Marissa Slaven of Juravinski Hospital, who took such wonderful care of Ruth. Donations may be made to St. Peter’s Hospital Foundation or to CityKidz Hamilton.

Ruth loved quietly, and without show. We will honour her in the same way, with a private family interment this summer. We will miss her dearly.
