John set sail into the sunset on December 7, 2023, at the age of 84. He was born in Kingston on December 11, 1938, to the late Barbara and Wilfred McDermott and was the brother of Charles. John was the beloved husband of 53 years to Phyllis and loving father of Heather (Ryan Trotter) and James (Lynsey) and proud Grandpa of Miles.
He was family oriented, had an adventurous spirit, cheerful outlook, and a great sense of humor. Always supportive of others, he was generous with his time and gentle with his guidance.
John was a graduate of Queens University, a Chartered Accountant, proficient sailor, accomplished swimmer, long standing member of the Taoist Tai Chi society and a 4th Degree member in the Knights of Columbus. He was consistently involved in charity work with various organizations to help those in need.
The family would like to express our sincere gratitude and appreciation to Dr. Majeed and the staff of Georgian Bay General Hospital for their kindness, care and compassion.
In keeping with John’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at Mundell Funeral Home, 79 West St., N., Orillia, on Monday December 11, 2023, from 5 - 8 pm. Funeral Mass will be held at Guardian Angels Church, 115 West St., N., Orillia, on Tuesday December 12, 2023, at 1:30pm. Reception to follow immediately back in the Mundell Reception Room. Parish Prayers to be said in the parlour Monday evening at 4:45 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations in John’s memory can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation through Mundell Funeral Home.
