Gary was one of six children born to Ray and Pat Murtha. He was raised in Toronto and married his high school sweetheart, Lynda Robb, in 1973. Together they raised their sons, Ryan and Chris, in the city until moving to Thornton in 1990.

Family was everything to Gary. He was so proud of his sons and the very close relationship this family of four had. The family, and love, grew with the addition of Ryan's children Ardan and Grace; Chris' wife Jill Archer and their children, Tommy and Nicky - all of whom he absolutely adored. They made his life worth living. The kids all knew it was Grandpa calling when he would whistle like a bird on their many phone calls when they were little. The past few years, phone calls ended with Grandma saying, “say goodnight Gary” and everyone echoed that phrase back, including Gary. He is already missed by Miss Daisy who sits staring out the window waiting for him to come home.

Gary was a cabinet maker and a partner in a millwork business until branching out on his own to build a successful carpentry business in the mid 90’s. He was joined by his son Chris in 2009 and they grew the business together, as partners, until Gary’s retirement in 2020.

Gary’s family would be honoured if you would consider a contribution to Hospice Simcoe in Barrie. Hospice Simcoe allows people to spend their final days in the comfort, dignity and exceptional care provided by an exceptional group of people and two service dogs, our sweet Daisy and Kyle.

Everyone is asked to celebrate Gary’s life in their own way as Gary did not want a funeral. Lynda, Ryan, Chris, Jill and the grandkids would love to see you all at a get together in his honour at a date to be shared with you soon.

Love lives on.
