Peacefully at home and with family by his side, Paul passed away on Friday, September 8, 2023, at the age of 78 years after a lengthy illness.

Cherished by his wife of 55 years, Terri, and deeply loved by his children, Treva (John), Jay (Angie), Amber (Jason), and Sean (Sarah). Proud Papa to his grandchildren, Saarah (Robb), Victoria (Jaike), Kaleb, Luka, Rowan, Klara, Mila, Kai, and Finn. Paul had a special place in his heart for his great-granddaughter, Ellis, who always made him smile. He was predeceased by his parents, Richard (2002) and Elsie Thompson (2023). He will be dearly missed by his sister, Donna, and many nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.

Paul was born in Middlesex, England in 1945 to his Canadian soldier father and his British war-bride mother and, at 8 months old, he came to Canada by sea. Paul grew up in Toronto until he left for the police academy in Aylmer, Ontario, after high school.

Paul had a lengthy and rewarding career with the OPP, starting off as a Constable at Barrie Detachment for 16 years. He retired after another 25 years supporting the Provincial Communications Centres in various roles.

Paul spent his retirement exploring his passions- the great outdoors, camping, fishing, photography, ham radio, woodworking, and spending time with family.

Paul was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it. He will be remembered for his quiet kindness and generosity, his steadfast love and support for his family, his passion for learning, his sense of humour and his contagious laugh. He will remain forever in our hearts.

A note of thanks to HACC, VON, and to all of Paul’s caregivers with a special thank you to Nicole, Jennifer, Gail, Marna, and Shirin for their kind and gentle care. A thank you to Dr. David Evans who helped us navigate Paul’s health challenges with knowledge and warmth.

A celebration of Paul’s life will be held on Saturday, October 21, 2023 at 33 Ellen St., Kempenfelt Room, Barrie, Ontario. A service will begin at 2:00 p.m. with a reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers and to honour of Paul’s life and legacy, please consider a donation to The PSP Society of Canada or Ontario Nature.
