Ontario's police watchdog says it is investigating the death of a Kingston, Ont., man who had barricaded himself inside a home after stabbing a woman.

The Special Investigations Unit says police responded to a call about a man "acting irrationally" outside a residence on Fraser Street around 7 p.m. Thursday.

The SIU says the man ran inside after officers arrived and confronted him at a distance.

It says the man stabbed a woman in the residence and then barricaded himself inside.

The police watchdog says the woman was taken to hospital and the man was found dead once officers entered the residence.

The SIU says a team of investigators has been assigned to the case and a post-mortem exam is being conducted today.

The SIU is asking anyone with information to contact them.
