Crews are working to repair a hydro pole on Bayfield Street after it was struck by an alleged impaired driver just after 1 a.m., Monday.

“The pole sustained enough damage that it was dangerously dangling. It snapped at the ground, I believe," Barrie police communications co-ordinator Peter Leon Leon said.

"They had to call in Alectra to do a replacement," he added. "(They) just didn’t feel comfortable with the way the pole was that if something came down, somebody could get hurt or cause another collision."

Bayfield Street will remain closed between Grove and Wellington streets while crews make the repair, Leon noted.

As of 12:30 p.m., Monday, there is no estimate for when the work would be completed.

“Whatever was on that pole has to go onto the new pole, so it could be a while," Leon said.

Barrie police have arrested and charged a 25-year-old Toronto man with impaired operation of a motor vehicle and driving over 80 milligrams.

The driver was arrested at the scene and taken to Barrie Police Service headquarters on Fairview Road before being released.

No injuries were sustained in the crash, Leon said.
