Area man killed after vehicle struck by train in Brechin: OPP

One man was killed and another person was injured when a train struck two vehicles at a railway crossing in Brechin Christmas Day at around 11 p.m.

Christmas Day turned deadly in Ramara Township.

A man from Kirkfield was killed Sunday night after his vehicle was struck by a train at a railway crossing in Brechin, near Wild Wing.

Orillia OPP say the fatal collision occurred at 11:04 p.m. According to a media release, two vehicles were struck by a train at the crossing.

Members of the Orillia OPP, Rama First Nations Police Service, Durham Regional Paramedic Service, Rama Paramedic Services and firefighters from Ramara Township were dispatched to the grisly scene on Highway 12 during a snowstorm that dumped more than two feet of snow on the area.

Polie say Sean Carpenter, 63, of Kirkfield was pronounced deceased at Soldiers' Memorial Hospital.

One person was also transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police say.

The OPP Technical Collision Investigation (TCI) team is at the scene and is assisting with the investigation. Highway 12 between Concession Rd 3 and Ramara Road 47 remains closed for the investigation, which is ongoing.
