SPRINGWATER TWP. – On Oct. 25, 2020 members of the Huronia West Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) along with Central Ontario ATV club trail wardens conducted several hours of patrol on the Simcoe County Forests trails on behalf of the Simcoe County Forestry Department.

Officers were enforcing the trail permit requirements of Simcoe County Bylaw No. 6753 which requires off road vehicles to display a trail permit to use the designated trails for recreational use.

As a result several off-road vehicles were stopped for inspection resulting in four recreational vehicles being charged under the County Bylaw No. 6753 for no trail permit with a fine of $215.

OPP also charged one ATV operator under HTA Reg. 316/03 for having a two-year-old toddler on board an ATV while on a highway and they assisted a 33 year old female off the trail with an injury to her arm after wiping out on her dirt bike. The operator of the dirt bike was taken to a local hospital by ambulance with minor injuries.

Numerous operators were in full compliance with all laws.

The OPP along with their partners at COATV, SCORRA and Simcoe County would like to thank those individuals for following the rules, operating their vehicles in a safe manner and being courteous toward other trail users.

Police would like to remind individuals that under provincials laws a helmet, licence plate, registration, insurance and driver's licence are required when operating their off road vehicles on public trails, road allowances and Simcoe County Forests. They must be presented to an officer upon demand.

A trail permit is required to operate an off road vehicle on the designated trails within the Simcoe County Forests. Travelling off the designated trails is also a by-law offence resulting in a $215 fine.

Trail permits can be purchased from OFATV and OFTR. For details refer to https://ofatv.org and https://oftr.ca.
