Body of North York man recovered from Severn River by OPP divers

The Orillia Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have recovered the body of a male swimmer who was reported as missing on the Severn River in Severn Bridge.

On July 23, 2019 just after midnight, a group of co-workers were swimming in the Severn River near Hamlet Bridge 57 when they decided to go to bed.

The following morning, the group were unable to locate one of their co-workers and police were called. 

Members of the Orillia detachment, Central Region Emergency Response Team (ERT), Central Region Canine, the Marine Unit, and Aviation Services responded and searched the area. 

After an unsuccessful ground search, the OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit (USRU) was called to conduct a search of the river.

After a short search, the OPP USRU located the body of the swimmer.  

The deceased has been identified as 48-year-old Juan Salazar-Hizen of North York.
