The owner of a 2003 Impala left their vehicle running while picking up an item and then watched a thief drive off with it in Meaford this morning.

Grey Bruce Ontario Provincial Police say they were called for a reported vehicle theft on Trowbridge Street in Meaford on Feb. 8 around 8:30 a.m.

According to a news release, the vehicle owner was outside and left their vehicle running while they were about 15 metres away from it to get an item.

"While walking back to the vehicle, the owner heard the door shut and the vehicle drove east-bound on Berry Street," states the police release.

The grey Impala had Ontario plates readying BYVS 361.

In light of this rather brazen theft, OPP are reminding people not to leave a running vehicle unattended, to lock their doors, to roll up car windows, keep valuables out of sight, and to keep registration and proof of insurance in your wallet or purse, not in the glove box.

Police also say to keep your keys in your pocket, not the vehicle, and to park in well-lit areas when leaving your vehicle parked during evening or nighttime hours.

If anyone has any information on this theft, they are being asked to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122. Should you wish to remain anonymous you can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or leave an anonymous online message at https://crimestop-gb.org/ where you may be eligible to receive a cash reward of up to $2,000.
