Wasaga man charged after metal falls off truck, causing Hwy. 400 back-up

Incident happened around 1:30 p.m., May 5, in the northbound lanes near Dunlop Street

Traffic in Highway 400's northbound lanes through Barrie were backed up for a couple hours on Thursday afternoon after large piece of metal fell off a truck and scattered across the highway.

At 1:30 p.m., OPP responded to Highway 400, just south of Dunlop Street, when a coil of steel fell off a flatbed truck and uncoiled. Blocks that had been holding it in place also ended up striking several vehicles and blocking all lanes heading north.

OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said on Friday that despite the large amount of metal on the highway, there was minimal damage to passing vehicles.

“Apparently a blocking, or blockings, that hold the load down became loose and hit a few cars,” Schmidt said. “There didn’t seem to be any serious damage to the vehicles.”

A 46-year-old Wasaga Beach man has been charged with having an unsecure load.
