Driver accused of assaulting police, damaging cruiser

Two other drivers charged in unrelated weekend occurrences

Three drivers face charges following weekend traffic stops initiated by the Southern Georgian Bay OPP Detachment.

In the early morning hours of April 2, an officer stopped a vehicle for speeding in the William Street and Highway 12 area of Midland.

"The officer, after speaking to the driver, entered into a drinking and driving investigation, and during this roadside investigation the driver became physically combative, assaulting the officer and later damaged the police cruiser," says a news release.

As a result of this investigation, 33-year-old Zachary D. Laycock of Elmvale was arrested and charged with:
    •    Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
    •    Assault a peace officer (two counts)
    •    Mischief - destroys or damages property
    •    Drive motor vehicle - perform stunt - excessive speed
    •    Speeding 1 - 49 Km/h over posted limit
    •    Driving motor vehicle with open container of liquor
    •    Driving motor vehicle with liquor readily available

Shortly before 8 p.m. on April 2, a 21-year-old driver from Tay Township was stopped for travelling more than twice the speed limit in the Simcoe County Road 93 and Thompsons Road area of Penetanguishene. The accused was charged with:
    •    Stunt driving excess speed - 127km/h in a posted 60 km/h zone
    •    Speeding
    •    Fail to surrender licence
    •    Drive motor vehicle - no licence
    •    Fail to surrender permit for vehicle
    •    Owner operate motor vehicle no Insurance

A traffic stop on Simcoe County Road 93 in Midland on the afternoon of April 2 resulted in a 31-year-old resident of Christian Island being charged with driving while under suspension contrary to the Highway Traffic Act.

In all three instances, the drivers had their drivers licences suspended and vehicles impounded.
