The 78-year-old Barrie man's body was recovered from the water near the Tiffin Street Boat Launch on Friday after being spotted by a couple fishermen between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m., Oct. 28.

The man was originally described by police as possibly being Indigenous, but Barrie police communications co-ordinator Peter Leon told said the background is now known to be East Indian.

“A family member contacted us when they saw the items we put out on social media," Leon said. "We are satisfied we know who the person is and our condolences go out to his family and friends."

Police had previously released images of the man's ring and a rosary that were among his personal effects.
