Provincial police say an alleged impaired driver tried to flee on foot after a crash during today's morning commute on Highway 400, leading to a chase.

Shortly before 7 a.m., July 27, a concerned citizen called the OPP about another driver on Highway 400 northbound who was driving erratically and possibly impaired.

Aurora OPP media relations officer Const. Nicola Morris explained what happened next.

“There was a collision near (the) Mapleview Drive exit in the northbound lane and when police arrived on scene, the driver fled on foot,” Morris said. “It was a short foot chase and he was apprehended not far away.”

Morris said the 22-year-old Etobicoke man was taken to hospital as a precautionary measure, but was not injured in the collision or subsequent chase.

The man was charged with impaired driving and obstructing a peace officer. He was given a 90-day driver's licence suspension, a court date and his vehicle was impounded for seven days.

Morris said there were no injuries to occupants in the other vehicle involved.

The OPP constable also thanked the person who made the initial call.

“We are very thankful that a concerned driver called this in and alerted police, who were able to get there before anyone else could be affected,” Morris said. “We encourage anyone who believes they have witnessed an impaired driver to call 911 so we can take the appropriate measures to protect public safety.”
