A couple kayaking on Lake Simcoe has been charged with not having life jackets.

Ontario Provincial Police were patrolling the lake on Canada Day when they spotted an inflatable kayak near Grape Island at around 1:30 p.m.

When officers stopped to speak with the couple, they say they didn’t have any personal flotation devices.

They were charged with operating a human powered pleasure craft without a personal flotation device.

“Officers want to remind all waterway users that there is no one single cause that leads to drownings but there are common contributors,” said OPP in a news release.

“Basic safety practices such as wearing a life jacket or a Personal Flotation Device (PFD) while on a vessel or in the water can be the difference between enjoying the water or not.”
