A Thornton man has been charged after Barrie police say he was clocked at 143 kilometres per hour in a 60 km/h zone on Mapleview Drive West this morning.

At around 12:30 a.m., Wednesday, Barrie police officers were monitoring traffic on Mapleview West when a pickup truck travelling westbound was spotted approaching their location at a high rate of speed.

Using a speed-measuring device, city police say the officers determined the truck was going 143 kilometres per hour in a 60 km/h zone.

The officers stopped the vehicle at Mapleview West at Essa Road and requested the driver to provide a breath sample.

Police say the driver, a 30-year-old Thornton man, refused to comply with the demand and was placed under arrest for failure/refusal to comply with a demand, contrary to the Criminal Code.

The driver was later released from custody and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice located in Barrie on March 22.

He was also charged with stunt driving and speeding under the Highway Traffic Act.

The man's truck has been impounded for seven days and his driver’s licence was also suspended for 90 days.
