City police say a Barrie man arrested for stunt driving spit in the officer's face while being placed on the back of the cruiser on Wednesday afternoon.

On July 12, 2023, at 12:25 p.m., an officer with the Barrie police traffic unit was enforcing the posted speed limit along Essa Road, near Beacon Road, when a vehicle was spotted travelling at a high rate of speed.

Police say the vehicle was clocked at 101 kilometres per hour in a 50-km/h zone and was stopped a short distance away.

The driver, a 29-year-old Barrie man, was arrested for stunt driving, but as he was being placed into rear seat of the cruiser, police say he spat in the face of the investigating officer.

The accused was charged with stunt driving, speeding and assaulting a peace officer. He was released from custody a short time later and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice located in Barrie on Aug. 30, 2023.

In accordance with the stunt driving-related legislation, the accused's vehicle has been impounded for 14 days and his driver’s license has been suspended for 30 days.
